The Route of the Winds

Fifteen worlds in six chapters, from First Flight to Tempest. Each sky brings something new, a gift from a God, all the way to Crowstone.

Why you set out

The springs around your temple have dried up: Volana, who carries the wind to the faraway springs, is asleep in the first spring, at Crowstone. Your people set out to look for the wind, and you go with their prayers. In every sky there’s an old temple to light up again and an enemy temple that wants the same wind. Refolo comes with you. At Crowstone, whoever wakes Volana chooses where her first breath goes. The whole story: The story of Aeolia.

Where to find it

In the main menu tap Campaigns: each campaign is a card, showing how far you’ve got. The Route of the Winds is the first. Continue opens the route map on the next world, The prologue reads the start of the story again. If the route is half done, the main menu puts it at the top: Continue the campaign.

How it works

Every world you win opens the next one and a new look. On the route map you see the worlds you’ve won, the open one and the ones still closed. Tap a world to see its shape, its level, its prize and your record. Before you set out you can choose some Omens: they make the world harder and their marks open more looks. The route is saved on your device and, on the website, also online, tied to your player.

Something new in every sky

Since v17.3 the route teaches one thing at a time. Each world brings something new, a gift from a God: an element, the specials, faith, a miracle, the crews. In the last three come the people: the village, the believing islands, the prayers. What hasn’t arrived yet stays dark in the bar and tells you which world it comes in. The first time you set sail for a world, a “New in this sky” sheet explains what’s new. Up to world 11 the enemy knows one step less than you. The springs of an element you don’t know yet give wind, but your temple doesn’t learn their element. Free play, the World of the Day and online matches have everything open, as always.

The chapters

  1. Volana’s Breath: the basics, then the Cloud Wall. You start with what Volana left you.
  2. Saetto’s Trial: Saetto gives you Lightning, then the specials.
  3. Nembra’s Patience: Nembra gives you Rain and teaches you to pray: faith and the Stone Cloud.
  4. Lucerno’s Light: Lucerno gives you Sun, the Dawn Bridge and the Collector’s crews.
  5. Sterpa’s Temple: Landslide and Current, the nests, the truce, the village. The enemy is Sterpa or a temple he lit.
  6. Crowstone: the believing islands, the prayers, the strongest enemy, then the end of the route.

The fifteen worlds

The worlds are always the same. They were chosen and tested with the computer playing against itself: on each one the two sides win almost equally. If you had already won worlds on the old route, you find them won, in their place in the new order.

If you’ve already played the route

The turns of the story, world by world, are in The story of Aeolia, in the closed section with the same name. In short: at Levina Refolo finds out what Sterpa wants, at Porto Dorabruna Sterpa offers you the truce, at Rocca Renastella you see his people and yours stop to build, at Olmafonda the people of the islands choose between the two temples, and at Crowstone you choose where Volana’s first breath goes.

What’s new

  • v24.6 Every world has its own sky. On the route it follows the story: clear and windy in Volana's worlds, veiled with rain in Nembra's, warm with sunset in Lucerno's, dark in the last ones. Other worlds have a fixed sky: same world, same sky.
  • v24.1 The game sends anonymous usage data: errors, smoothness (frames per second, graphics quality, loading times) and how matches go, including where players stop in the tutorial and on the route. They help us find errors and see where the game is slow.
  • v24 Nothing changes on the Route of the Winds or in the tutorial: changing lands, the temple in stages and great miracles are in the other matches.
  • v24 Omens, the “Cross” symmetry, the looks and the Collector’s crews are now in your language. The “End of the route” feat asks for all fifteen worlds.
  • v23 On the Route of the Winds, people arrive in the last three skies: the village at Rocca Renastella, believing islands at Olmafonda, prayers at Crowstone. The briefing and the “New in this sky” sheet explain them.
  • v22.2 At the end of “Learn to play” the main button is “Start the campaign”: it takes you to the prologue of the Route of the Winds and to Albena, the first world, with the cards the campaign hasn’t opened yet turned off. Before, it started a free match on First Flight, on a random world.
  • v22 Campaigns: the Route of the Winds now has its own Campaigns screen, with a painted card that shows which world and chapter you’re on and what comes in the next world. Future campaigns will show up there.
  • v22 Accounts: in Settings → Profile you can create an account with email and password (you need to be at least 14; under 14, a parent creates it). You keep everything you’ve done so far: route, Cirro, saved matches, score and name.
  • v21 Cirro never gets stronger. Between matches he remembers his lessons and only grows in looks: bigger after 10 matches and after 30, feather tips in the color of the element you use most, a light belly if he repairs a lot, dark wings if he hits a lot. Cirro stays saved on this phone or computer, along with your progress on the route.
  • v21 The opening tale is new: a film in fourteen scenes, with Refolo telling how Volana sleeps at Crowstone and how whoever wakes her chooses where her first breath goes. If you had seen the old tale, you see the new one once, at startup; after that you’ll find it in “The Tale”. At the end it takes you to “Learn to play”. The prologue of the Route of the Winds is now a short reminder.
  • v21 Cirro, the hand and the signs aren’t in the tutorial or on the Route of the Winds. The Bare Hands Omen also bans the hand.
  • v21 After a match on the Route of the Winds, “Menu” at the end of the match and “Leave” in the pause take you back to the free world you had chosen, not to the route world.
  • v20 On the Route of the Winds there’s no belief, no prayers and no villages: the route teaches one thing at a time.
  • v20 The God’s line and the Village button aren’t in the tale, the tutorial or on the Route of the Winds.
  • v20 After a match on the Route of the Winds, the title screen goes back to the world you had chosen. Before, Skirmish started again on the route world, and there the visits of the gods, night, villages and prayers stayed off until you reloaded the page.
  • v20 On the Route of the Winds, night comes in the last three skies: Rocca Renastella, the islands of Olmafonda and the skies of Crowstone. The briefings and the diary say so.
  • v20 At Crowstone, when Volana wakes up, a line says what kind of God you became along the route: Guardian God, Storm God or still a young God.
  • v19 Sky Diary: after every sky you win on the Route of the Winds, Refolo writes a page about that sky. You can read it at the end of the match and from the world card; all the pages are in the wiki too.
  • v19 There’s no night on the Route of the Winds: the route teaches one thing at a time.
  • v18 In four-player matches the messages follow the story: the enemy Keeper brought to your altar turns to light and rises to the gods. The route says fifteen worlds in the Feats too.
  • v17.3 The Route of the Winds has fifteen worlds in six chapters, and each world gives you just one new thing. You start with bridges, Collectors, Gusts and Steles; then, one world at a time, come the Wall, the four elements, the specials, faith and miracles, the crews, the nests and the truce.
  • v17.3 The story has its gods: Volana of the Wind, Saetto of the Lightning, Nembra of the Rain and Lucerno of the Sun. Each chapter is a meeting with one of them. Volana sleeps in the first spring, at Crowstone, and Sterpa, the spirit of a temple in the south, is racing to wake her before you.
  • v17.3 Three new worlds: Seriso, Lunaria and Pietra di Fiorina. At Porto Dorabruna, Sterpa offers you a truce: if you accept, the route stops there.
  • v17.3 If you had already moved along the route you lose nothing: the worlds you won stay won, and the new worlds that come before them count as won.
  • v17.3 With the route and the branches the rules change: replays and saved matches from v17.2 open with the v17.2 page, as with older versions.
  • v17.2 Each world of the Route of the Winds and the World of the Day has a briefing that tells you what to expect in that sky. At the end of the match, a line tells how it went on that world.
  • v15 Below is a short list: The Route of the Winds, Online match, World of the Day, Saved matches. “Matches on hold” only shows up when you have some. Feats, Replays and Settings are icons at the bottom.
  • v14 At the end of a match the three buttons at the bottom are no longer cut off on narrow phones: Menu and Route sit on one line, Rematch below, as wide as the screen.
  • v13 The Route of the Winds: twelve worlds to win one after another. You start on First Flight and end on Tempest, with world rules that get tougher and tougher. Each world you win opens the next one.
  • v13 On the route map you see the worlds you won, the open one and the ones still locked. Tap a world to see its shape, level and reward.
  • v13 Omens: before a route world you can pick some to make it harder, for example less wind at the start, a faster enemy or no specials. Each one is worth 1 to 3 marks, and marks unlock new looks.
  • v13 Looks: banner colors, seals, sky tints and temple decorations, won along the route. They only change how your side looks, never the game.
  • v13 The route is saved on your device. On the website it’s also saved online, tied to your player.
